Elisabeth of France, Queen of Spain.
On this day in history, the 14th of August 1727, royal identical twins – Louise Élisabeth of France, Duchess of Parma and Anne Henriette of France were born.
Élisabeth and Henriette were the eldest daughters of Louis XV and Maria Leszczyńska and were born and raised at Versailles. They were put into the care of Marie Isabelle de Rohan, duchesse de Tallard. Having grown up closely, they were greatly saddened to be seperated, when Élisabeth moved to Spain, having been married off to the Duke of Parma at aged twelve. Henriette had the desire to marry her cousin, the Duke of Orléans, but the marriage was denied by her father, the King and she remained unmarried for the rest of her life.
The twins reportedly only saw each other once, in 1748, several years before Henriette died of smallpox in 1752, at the age of 24. Élisabeth was distraught over her sister’s death and returned to France again the same year to visit her tomb and remained at Versailles for almost a year. In 1759 Élisabeth’s died of smallpox, the same disease that killed her twin. The sisters who began life together, but led very different lives, were buried beside one another at Saint-Denis Basilica. Sadly, their tombs were desecrated in 1793, during the French Revolution.

The French Crown Jewels exhibited in the Galerie d’Apollon at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
